The aim of the event, according to the United Nations, is to ‘confront those crises and challenges...by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity that takes many forms — the simplest of which is friendship’.

The History of the International Day of Friendship
The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed in 1958 during a dinner between some friends in a town in Paraguay.Out of this original meeting, the ‘World Friendship Crusade’ was born: a foundation that promotes friendship among all people, regardless of race, colour or religion. Since then, July 30th has been celebrated as Friendship Day in Paraguay was gradually adopted internationally, and is now recognised by the UN as the International Day of Friendship.
